Susanne Rhein is a Ph.D. candidate at the Center for Comparative and International Studies and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy. Her research explores two overarching questions: First, how does the distribution of costs over time associated with prospective policy intervention shape public opinion? Second, how do political factors that address uncertainty about the delayed benefits associated with prospective policies, such as policy design choices or actor involvement, mitigate public opposition to them? To answer these questions empirically, she collects (experimental) survey data with a focus on climate policies that incentivize carbon capture and storage (CCS) and negative emission technologies (NETs) in high-income European democracies.
Susanne holds a master’s degree in political science with a focus on comparative politics and international relations from the University of Salzburg. During her studies, she held several research assistant positions among others at the Horizon 2020 projects Populism and Civic Engagement and The Choice for Europe since Maastricht. She also worked as a research intern at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Her research has been published in international peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of European Public Policy, Politics and Governance, and Climatic Change.
